The growth of BC's knowledge
economy has increased the demand for lifelong learning opportunities.
By offering programs and services at different locations,
UBC is positioned to effectively respond to this demand.
UBC at Robson Square provides an urban gateway to the vast
cultural and intellectual resources of BC's oldest and largest
university.
UBC Properties
Trust was involved in negotiating the lease for UBC Robson
Square with the landlord. It also took a lead role in securing
approval from the City of Vancouver, and managed the installation
of improvements.
A large land gift from Finning International Inc. will allow
UBC and three other institutions to develop educational
programs in Vancouver's newly emerging high-tech centre.
Finning donated
an 80 per cent share of a 20-acre site on Great Northern
Way to UBC, Simon Fraser University, Emily Carr Institute
of Art and Design and the British Columbia Institute of
Technology.
UBC Properties
Trust assisted Finning in the arrangements for this generous
gift of land and is working with UBC and other partner institutions
to explore options for training and education programs for
the property, as well as development strategies to fund
them.
Currently, the
UBC Varsity Rowing Team trains from a parking lot under
the Burrard Street Bridge. There are no facilities to house
equipment and the crews launch the shells from the beach.
The tradition of rowing at UBC is historic, producing Olympic
gold medal winners consistently over years, and recently
contributing to the Canadian National Team's success at
the World Championships with the Gold Medal win.
The University of British Columbia along with the Gold for
Life Executive Committee and St. George's School, have plans
to construct a UBC Rowing and Paddling Boathouse on the
middle arm of the Fraser River in Richmond. The Richmond
City Council has approved the building of a UBC Thunderbird
Rowing Boathouse on the middle arm of the Fraser River as
part of an extensive redevelopment plan.
The program will
serve Varsity Rowers, Learn-to-Row, Recreational and Masters
Rowers, as well as enable other community water sport programs
consistent with Richmond's OCP, planning principles and
processes, to have access to a boathouse facility. The boathouse
will also allow access storage opportunities, not limited
to kayaks and dragon boats.
