UBC is its own politically distinct area. Pursuant to the University Act, the UBC Board of Governors provides governance for all academic activity on campus, while the GVRD regulates non-institutional development activity on campus, pursuant to the Local Government Act. To provide municipal like governance for the residents in UBC's Neighbourhoods, UBC established the University Neighbourhoods Association (UNA), which serves the evolving non-institutional residential community.

UNA directors are either elected or appointed by UBC. These directors represent existing and future non-institutional residents such as Hampton Place. They also represent the University administration, and the student body through the Alma Mater Society (AMS). Elected UNA representatives will in time comprise the majority of the UNA Board.
