UBC Properties Investments Ltd. is the trustee of UBC Properties Trust. The trustee operates with a Board of Directors currently comprising six outside directors and three members of the UBC Administration, including the President of UBC. UBC Properties Investments Ltd reports to the UBC Board of Governors through UBC's Vice President, Administration & Finance, who also administers contractual development duties and tasks.

The outside Directors are chosen to represent their respective areas of knowledge and their expertise. Current Board Members include:

 

Brad Bennett

Brad is President of McIntosh Properties Ltd., a real estate investment and holding company based in Kelowna.  He is a graduate in Marketing from the British Columbia Institute of Technology.  Brad currently serves as a Director of BC Medical Innovation Fund (BCMIF) and Quails' Gate Estate Winery.

He serves on the Board of the University of British Columbia as a member and Chair of the Board and is past Chair of the Board of Governors of Okanagan University College. Brad also currently serves as Chair of the UBC Okanagan Regional Advisory Council, Chairman of the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation and is Co-Chair of the Okanagan Partnership-Cluster Competitiveness Strategy.  Brad also serves as a Director of the Premier's Technology Council.

 

Sandra Cawley
Ms. Cawley has been a real estate appraiser and development consultant since 1981, when she graduated from the University of British Columbia. She has been a principal in Burgess Cawley Sullivan & Associates since 1988.   Ms. Cawley specializes in real estate valuation, marketing studies, and development consultancy in the residential, office, shopping centre, industrial park, land subdivision, and hotel markets. She also acts as an expert witness on behalf of property owners and law firms.

 

Caleb Chan
President & Chairman of Burrard International Holding Inc., which develops and manages commercial properties. The company also owns and manages 14 golf courses in BC and Hawaii. Mr. Chan is an MBA graduate from the University of California, Berkeley Campus, and holds an honorary doctorate from University of British Columbia. He was a major contributor of the Chan Centre for Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia.

 

Jim Houston
Jim Houston is Chairman and Director of Italian Bento Power Corporation, a major developer of wind energy in Europe. He is also a Director of the College of the Desert Foundation, Palm Springs. He holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Washington, and has been active in real estate development for the past 40 years, especially in the field of residential development.

 

 

Robert Lee
Robert Lee is a President and Director of Prospero, an international real estate agency and property management company. He has a bachelor of Commerce degree and an honorary doctorate from UBC, and also holds the order of BC, the UBC distinguished alumnus, and is a Director of Wall Financial Corporation. Mr. Lee has been active at the University as Chancellor and member of the Board of Governors.

 

 

Dennis Pavlich
Vice President of External and Legal Affairs at UBC, Mr. Pavlich is a graduate of Yale University and a professor of Law at UBC. He is also Chair and President of Great Northern Way Campus Ltd.

 

 

 

 

Al Poettcker
President and CEO of UBC Properties Trust, Mr. Poettcker has a Bachelor of Commerce from UBC and is a Director of the Urban Development Institute. He is past president of UBC Alumni Association.

 

 

 

Terry Sumner
Vice President of Administration and Finance at UBC, Mr. Sumner olds a Bachelor of Arts, Simon Fraser University. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.

 

 

 

 

Stephen Toope

President and Vice Chancellor of the University of British Colubmia, Prof. Toope earned his PhD from Trinity College, Cambridge, England and his undergraduate degree in common law (LLB) and civil law (BCL) with honours from McGill University (1983), and graduated magna cum laude with his AB in History and Literature from Harvard University (1979).

From 1994-1999, Prof. Toope served as the youngest dean in the history of McGill University’s Faculty of Law. Prof. Toope served as the Associate Dean, Graduate Studies and Research at McGill Faculty of Law from 1991-1994 after achieving full professorship in 1999. He became an Associate Professor in 1993 after serving as an Assistant Professor in McGill’s Faculty of Law from 1987-1993 upon completion of his PhD. He served as Law Clerk to the Rt. Hon. Chief Justice Dickson of the Supreme Court of Canada from 1986-1987.

As a former president of the Canadian Council on International Law, Prof. Toope has served as board chair and member of various non-governmental organizations promoting human rights and international development, including the Canadian Human Rights Foundation and the World University Service of Canada. He represented Western Europe and North America on the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances from 2002-2005.

 

Dan Walsh
Dan Walsh is President of Grosvenor Capital Corporation and Grosvenor Capco, the residential divisions of Grosvenor's Canadian and U.S.A. operations.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Oxford University and is a Director of the Urban Development Institute.

 

 

 

Randy Zien
Randy Zien is President of Wesbild Holdings Ltd. and Inwest Investments Ltd., active in development of large residential communities and commercial real estate. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Law Degree from UBC. Prior to running Inwest Mr. Zien was a Partner at Borden Ladner Gervais (formerly Ladner Downs), specializing in corporate tax and finance. He was also a Governor of the Canadian Tax Foundation.

 

The outside directors are all volunteers committed to assisting the University. Although each director is given a stipend for his or her time, each has followed Bob Lee's example by donating it back to the University.
